Owen Mattheson’s Ruach album Review from Gas house radio, Philadelphia.

Vonj Uzele is a native of Kenya and lifelong musician with five full-length albums up to-date. For this most recent album, titled Ruach, meaning Spirit, Vonj enlisted the impromptu aid of percussionist Martin Donovan, saxophonist Carmine Manfredi, Drummer Mat Diamond and Spanish guitarist Garry Millhouse.

Ruach is thirteen tracks of musical charisma, sophistication, and uniqueness to the extent of which a majority of people haven’t been exposed to since the mid to late sixties. Skilled improvisation matched with equal parts spirit and personality burst from every composition; there is a lot of “musical bravery” in this album, ranging from experimentation with acid-jazz like dissonance, to incredibly dynamic and unorthodox song structures where about two or three different experiences can be gathered from one four-minute track. One of the many examples of such a shift, from Edwin Starr-like soul vocals and instrumentation to a swirl of free-form/acid jazz and psychedelic rock is the second track, “Skin Deep”. Songs such as “Gold Rush” demonstrate raw, fuzzy guitar riffage and commendable soul-influenced vocal talent that is refreshingly familiar to the inclusive and eclectic musical experimentation that was evident in sixties and seventies jam bands like The Grateful Dead or the Allman Brothers. Perhaps this musical conceptualization is most apparent in the six minute piece titled River Nun. An improvisational mix of psychedelic rock, soul, jazz, and even hints of funk, the track stands without a doubt as a unifying and mesmerizing spiritual journey that seems to emanate a since of musical togetherness and groove that is rare to come by and expect from modern musicians in a Western society. In short, there are so many different components to Vonji that it is difficult to fully comprehend every dynamic and experience the album has to offer. From sophisticated modal guitar playing, to unorthodox percussion and drumming, to elements of Eastern musical philosophy and psychedelic rock, there is without a doubt something in here for anyone to appreciate, and the great level of charisma and talent among these artists is unmistakable.

The musical objectives of Ruach are, at heart, incredibly charismatic and sophisticated. The playing is so dynamic, eclectic, and experiential that the group seems to forge their own genre out of about four or five existing ones. To most people, especially an average individual whose musical interests might be somewhat limited, comprehending and conceptualizing thirteen tracks of Ruach’s music is going to be somewhat of a challenge. The music is so multifaceted and dense that those lacking significant patience and understanding probably won’t last through about the third or fourth song. Basically, this type of music, although incredibly skilled, sophisticated, and designed to bring people together, is unfortunately only going to be thoroughly appreciated and listened to be those of a particular personality, perspective, and worldview who generally have the patience to see past instant-gratification in their sensibilities and see music more as a true art form as opposed to a mere source of entertainment. For this reason, like acid-jazz fanatics, dead-heads, and other specific music fans, Vonj and their album Ruach is somewhat of a niche work, despite how quality it is and how much it should be commended.

Ultimately however, the mainstream success of these tracks or lack thereof is probably of little importance to the sort of musicians that would create an album such as this. Vonj Uzele’s aspirations are far different than those of a marketable artist. The goal here was to create a musical journey to bring people together and hopefully work toward a sense of communal enlightenment and togetherness. For all those that are proactive enough to listen to the message, this album is, without a doubt, a shining success.

Vonj – Words of songs Chapter 47 “Song of Thought”

listening is learning

whisper whisper,

where’s the wisdom,

can you perceive with your mind,

different colours, different sounds,

some place where people can travel,

through the speed of thought,

a destination where we don’t have to breath to live,

but we live in harmony,

MANTRA

Broaden your mind,

listening is learning learning is living in love,

SECOND PART

how long will we continue to live against our essence,

we are built innately to know the truth,

but you pick fear?,

But fear is the opposite of love!,

fear paralyses feeling ,

so listen to the silent one,

for the propaganda is loud,

how long will you hold your breath?,

MANTRA

Broaden your mind,

listening is learning learning is living in love,

THIRD PART

tell all the people not run,

tell all the people not to hide,

tell all the people not to fall,

tell all the people to be strong,

tell all the people to rise as one,

rise as one, RISE AS ONE,

MANTRA

Broaden your mind,

listening is learning, learning is living for love,

Nowstory Pt 1 “Time”

Dear family, I greet you all with grace glory and hope, Grace is the experience I humbly share with you, Glory in the direction I would like to enlighten you in, and Hope in that forever the truth will stand strong.

Day-to-day I continue to look into each aspect of our general disposition in life. On the things that I am unfamiliar with I try to understand, and on the things that are familiar to me I try to understand even further. We must learn to double-check on the familiar in order to be able to shed undeniable wisdom whenever we speak on a subject. research is crucial for our growth, first hand experience is even more important, and even though one individual may come at you with a life lesson, it is important for us never to accept the information through belief but only through our own privet study of the particular lesson, this is sound right reasoning, as someone else’s half truth passed on to you may make you live a lie. take everything you read or hear with a pinch of salt family.

One aspect of disposition we seem to be stuck in is the precept of time. Now here is a question, many of us do not know what time is meant to be, or whether or not it really exists, and if time does exist should we perceive time in a different way in order for us to synchronise better with our true nature?. I pose this question because it seems to me that the closer we are to the commandments of time the further apart we become from nature. We can see that in everything we term as “great” encompasses the perceptive principles of timelessness, we can find this principals within the family of Architecture, Art, Music etcetera, but why do we say this?.

In so-called modern civilisation we use the numbers within the clock to tell us when to begin something and when to end something. may this be classified as human beings tampering with a universal order?. Who has ever heard of the phrase… “Time is money and money is time”?, We are set in this vicious circle where we need to be on time to get paid so we can pay our bills on time. Every institution is governed by money and time, So what state of mind has this put us in? Rush, impatience, intolerance, which leads us into frustration and anger which ultimately becomes destruction and death, remember we serve “time” when we are in prison, are we being mentally imprisoned by time?. In this we can identify that time certainly exists in our minds, but was this enforcement of time natural to the universal order or is this something that was man-made?.

remember all along I am speaking in a state of mind that does not look to material things with desire, so we can forget about big house’s and fast cars because those things that we work so hard to get make us live fast and die young. I am thinking of the most optimal way the human mind and body was naturally designed to flourish. Indeed the body and the mind can adopt into different standards of living, but I have yet to see the body and the mind evolve, the natural way of living may be the only way that our minds and bodies will be able to evolve from its current state, instead we seem to devolve as we revolve around the repetition of time.

There must be an alternative way in which we can think of time, as where time is abstract we cannot trace it, and where we can trace it “the clock” we cannot synchronize with it because everything pure comes in variables, from your heartbeat, to the earths revolution around the sun, in fact the very music that harmonises with our psyche is un-clocked..(this is a study I will get into in part 2). The clock only serves for the means of practical indication, if we look closely we may understand that this means of external indication may have made us lose our natural instincts. One may pose that we need the calendar, but maybe if we were keen on meeting particular events then surely practically counting the nights following up to the event would be nothing too arduous, I am sure then most events would certainly cater to be worth attending. but we need a clock?, how would we know the time of day? but do we? maybe if we paid more attention to the skies we would be able to naturally judge any part of now. so what else do you need the clock for, to time your cooking? can we smell when something has cooked? or are we in the living room watching TV and need an alarm to know when your food is ready?, So you need to catch a flight? if we really need to travel 8 thousand miles our reason must be profound, maybe we do not need to take flight on an object to travel long distances, may we tap into something that is within us to make this possible? but as we cannot even build any means of physical transportation we are currently stomped on this. if your body needs an external signal or reminder to act on something then we should automatically know that we are acting against our nature and intern the light we are all born with will burn out on earth quick. remember this every time your alarm wakes you up, every time the recess or church bell rings and when your 9 gets your mind down to 5 everyday.

We should start to live by what is “first” in us, and not “Second” out of us, We can prove that Energy never dies and only changes, and if we perceive the body and the soul to be immortal then why do we measure ourselves according to revolutions earth travels around the sun?, do we know that this measurement changes every year as earth continues to slow down?.

The saying that “age is just a number” is to be taken more seriously than the vague interpretation we use to make us feel young, why do we want to be young when we get to a certain number and when we are children we want to be adults?, what would the world be like if we all had the child like desire to feel greater? this idea is surprisingly revolutionary in accordance to today’s man-made standards, Jimi Hendrix once said that a man should not be measured according to his age but to the amount of miles he has travelled in his mind.. can we come to fathom this idea?. When your physical and spiritual birthday happened only once why do we strife for repetition?, We should be at constant change in progression just like the universe around us.

Should we throw time out to trash? not necessarily, we can utilise it but it is never any means to revolve your world around it, however we should try to aim to live in a natural path of timelessness, If we were not worried about the length on which we have to educate or be educated, hear music or play music, gain enlightenment or enlighten another we would have more life in us then we do now. To become timeless one must first begin to question who’s watch one is running on, and if it is keeping you fully aware and attentive on both realms of existence “the conscious and subconscious. break out of the circle and be free to spiral up in the infinite progression of life.

Joy and gladness to all

Do not follow me! Know thy self & walk with me

Do you know who you are? can you face your truth?

Here we are in this mortal body, but we cannot even begin to identify what makes the body what it is, let alone come to fathom the power of our brain, mind, spirit and soul, The different dimensions encompassing our very existence. we express vague phrases like “I know this like the back of my hand” do you really know the back of your hand?. We need to master ourselves first, and only then would we stand the chance of understanding something outside of ourselves.

It is time for us to begin to realise more of our own being, most of us in this day and age have lost our sense of identity, and so we get caught up in the external, looking too much into labels and titles while overlooking the reality of deeds, and truths being presented to us. We must be humble enough to submit to experienced minds for our mental growth, just as a child should look up to be guided by his or her parents, However no matter how great we perceive someone or something to be we should never fall in to idolatry. Idolatry and self neglect are one in the same. Idolatry of a person place or thing is the most lethal poison one can ever consume, not only because we start developing limitations to our mental growth by giving up our glory, but we can also be left subjected into beliefs without question of what truths or lies are being instilled upon us, this is a cause for mental destruction. What is more disturbing is that the things or the persons we idolize tend to be outside our family circle, for instance, they are too many names in the past and present that are idolised merely because of their popularity, but in the popularity of the names and titles we seem to have lost the messages behind those labels no matter how important those messages where.

We all know that TV and now the Internet is the new cocaine that we are addicted to, so everything we view in the box we seem to be infatuated by, thus music entertainers, actors, athletes and comics have become the gods we worship, and even more sickening is that when these famous individuals pass away we still cannot let them rest in peace, and so now the money oriented entertainment industry is wise to this, and industries can continue making annual profits with bastardized versions of unfinished works the deceased left behind.

Now the industry is pushing the envelope even further… The technology of the hologram has enabled companies to bring back the image of “past stars” into live events, the invention of the hologram is one of the new methods used to make big money, now live shows can be made possible without the need of the entertainer being present. We have already seen, Michael Jackson, Tupac Shakur, Elvis Presley, selling out shows after their deaths through the hologram. Sadly this is only the beginning, soon you will witness a new industry unfold where nothing is real.

I envision the red carpet in the future with nothing but holograms and robots, where X men and women of the past will be brought live into award ceremonies promoting merchandise and fashion brands etcetera, it will become possible for past sporting events to be re enacted live and all this will be made possible not because of the advancement of technology but because of the demand of a people with no imagination to move forward, History may literally repeat itself soon. We do not appreciate we worship, we do not respect we idolize, and the more we do this the further we will lose ourselves and the more we will become subject to exploitation by the money makers.

Nine times out of ten , fanatics have less of a problem than the people they idolize, for example If one was to step into the shoes of the rich and the famous for one day you will see how imbalanced their lives really are, So the responsibility falls on the hand of the majority to open their eye’s, for most of those who are in the lime light like politicians, entertainers and the pope are nothing but products, thus why they may be reluctant to show the world that indeed everyone has an equal potential for mental growth.

To begin to start defining ourselves we must first learn to tell the difference between what is real and what is false, Ask yourself if a picture you may see of a person in any mainstream magazine is real, Or does photo shop define this persons beauty?, is that a real singing voice your hearing on the radio? or is there a certain threshold of auto-tune in the mix?, is that real & authentic music or is it a sample from the past?, Is that scenery in the film real or is this computer generated imagery? Is that natural food or is this processed?, is that a true story in the news paper or is this propaganda? is that politician going to positively change anything or is he or she buying your vote? did your favourite sporting team really win the game out of effort and passion or was money the power that made the losing team throw the match. find the differences and you will realise the reality we are living in.

So brothers and sisters it is time to leave behind names and titles and start to hear the message. the truth is embedded in you, and as an analogy, each letter I typed on this document was always there in the formula of my computer, I just needed to type into the keyboard for them to appear in the graphics. Same with the truth, every truth we need is all in us we just need to tap into our essence for its manifestation.

Life is simple, indeed I say again, simple!, but because we were fooled somewhere along the way, we were left confounded, and for those whom happened to be lucky enough to have the right teacher around them early in their lives, in adulthood they are left outcast by society. so humanity suffers regardless whether or not we know the truth.

Long ago someone asked me an interesting question, how do we know that the truth is meant for this planet? he went on to say that maybe this is not a dimension where truth can ever reign supreme, maybe we are in hell and don’t know it, and this planet was designed for people to lose themselves, get Fooled, Lied to, Broken and Hurt, and there are other dimensions where truth prospers over all things. at first I laughed as the question was presented in a somewhat comical fashion, but this is a philosophical question, hey what if right? I must be honest and express to you that I would have believed this theory if and only if I did not know myself. My perception is that in this world we embody the power of choice, we can dictate upon our environment, and anything we can imagine we can make possible thus not deeming this world hell, but in our choices lie a responsibility which many men have fallen short, this is why we may see more bad than good, and the test for mankind may be to see if we have the power to overcome the negativity in order for us to be strong enough to withstand infinite positivity along the stages of our soul and spirit, life after death. This may be one way of justifying the meaning of our reality.

Know yourself and all will be answered. If I asked you what your super-power was on earth what would you say?, We can evidently see that we have not reached any physical boundaries yet, and I know that there is a potential to harness within ourselves a greater power not seen before on earth. unfortunately history has proved that only when something catastrophic happens to the world then this is when more people are likely to rise up and awaken a golden age, I am here to say why wait for calamity to strike before rising up your mind?.

Where did your powers go? a long time ago, art was pure, the music was good, morality was respected, and even then we had much room to grow. The question is if I wrote something that could change humanity forever, the formula to eternal life, unlocking the doors of time travel, revealing a means of free energy through natural resources, a cure for all disease, revealed all of Histories truths and lies, what would be the point to reveal this to a people who are not ready?, a people caught up in spite, hate, jealousy, greed, lust and thirst for blood?, understand why many great stories were told in forms of metaphors and allegories, if any great message of truth was plain in translation then I know for sure 2 things would be, the death of humanity or a paramount progression in truth, in other words either eternal damnation or heaven, but confusion is keeping us alive but living a lie. What place do you want to dwell? if you want to know the answer, Know yourself brothers & sisters. and hear me when I say that in this moment truth is what we need.
