Passion Vs. Obsession

In the spiral of life sometimes we can become lost within what we do, thus formulate negative habits while at the same time believing that what we are doing is correct according to the chosen path that we are on. We all want to be established within the works we choose to carry out, however we must come to the knowing of what becomes a passion and what becomes an obsession.

When I was in my teens and going on into my early 20s I knew who I was, a passionate musician, and I wanted to be the best at what I was doing, However it came to a point where I became obsessed within what I was doing but totally oblivious to my problem, I thought I was only strengthening my chances for success.

Everyday I would practice on my instrument for 6 hours straight, and if I had a day where I did not put in those exact hours or more I actually believed that this made me a worse musician than I was the previous day, This is when my passion turned into an obsession, and I discovered this the hard way after I fell down some steps and injured 3 figures, making it impossible to play any instrument for a term. Inside I felt broken, and I was not looking forward to getting back into playing as at the time I knew It would take me a long-term to get back to my previous standard of playing. Days came and went and I started to manoeuvre my thinking toward a more positive direction, focused on other things that would later on broaden my general understanding of music and life. When I started playing again I found that not only had I become more fluent within my style of playing but through inspiration I found new ways of approaching my instrument, setting me miles ahead creatively and technically from the state I was in before my injury.

I determined that If I was born with a passion and I wanted to improve on what I did, then it was not about how long I spent practising it, it was about how much I could control my passion. One must come to a holistic way of thinking if you really want to succeed in any particular practice. Balance is key for the growth of anyone’s potential, But Obsession kills the mind, and your gifting’s cannot be birthed with an absent mind. Obsession is also the father of urge, and it was my urge for repetition that prevented me from progressing, human beings are not created to repeat anything, this is one of the things that separates us from the animal kingdom, repetition as a term can very easily equate to stagnancy. We must be clear that there is a difference between having a need to do something and having the urge, when we need to do something we should find ways to answer it, However when we have the urge to do something we must question it.

This philosophy can apply to and indeed crossover all forms of day to day living, Can you miss your favourite TV program? can you choose at will when not to smoke? can you skip one saturday night out with your friends and spend it with your family?, Are you really in the driving seat?..

Detract your obsessions by thinking holistically and you will be able to successfully nurture your true passion.
